Dormer Details
Gates, Posts & Signs
I'll admit that I have soft spot for Gates, Posts and Signs as they define boarders and boundaries of land, and guide the user to an entry place. Many times the gates and posts exist long after the cottage has been lost and this is another clue as to how the property was used 100 years ago.

The 'Other' House
Many of the wealthy summer residences lived in cities like Boston, New York, Washington, Philadelphia, and Chicago where they worked. The running joke is that they came to their 'cottages' for the summer, but these cottages were very large. But if you see what their 'primary residences' looked like, you will understand why these houses in York Harbor were called cottages. Apparently, it wasn't a joke.

Classic Autos of the 1910-1920's
In September 2011 there was a classic car meet of cars from the 1910-11920's era at the State Neck Inn parking lot in York Harbor. These are the vintage cars that would be seen at the large cottages at the time.
Yachts of York Harbor
Sailing and yachting became a more common pass time in the late 1880's. A few of the cottage owners had large yachts that would be seen offshore during the summer. The York Harbor Class sailboat - a 24 Ft. (LOA) B.B. Crowninshield design, was the first common design of a small sailing yacht. It was most likely a variation of the Manchester 17 and the Dark Harbor 17 designs.
